Why one-way video interviews quietly lose your best candidates

Recorded video feels efficient until you look at who drops out and how little you actually learn. A two-way conversation changes both.

A recruiting team reviewing candidate interviews

One-way video took off because it solved an obvious problem: recruiters could not call every applicant, so they asked candidates to record answers instead. It scales. The trouble is what it quietly costs you on the way.

The completion problem

Recording answers into a camera with no one on the other end is uncomfortable, and the candidates who feel that discomfort most are often the ones with other offers. They start the recording, decide it is not worth the effort, and close the tab. You never see them, and you never know you lost them.

A live conversation feels like an interview, not an audition. Completion goes up because the experience respects the candidate.

You learn less than you think

A fixed set of recorded prompts gives every candidate the same questions and no chance to go deeper. When an answer is vague, you cannot ask the follow-up that would tell you whether the person actually knows the work. You are left grading a monologue.

  • No follow-up when an answer is thin or unusually strong
  • No read on how someone thinks when pushed slightly
  • No way to confirm a claim with a quick second question
  • Reviewers still watch every clip, so the time saving is smaller than it looks

What a two-way interview adds

A conversational AI interviewer asks the next question based on the last answer. It probes where a response is weak and moves on where it is solid, the way a good recruiter would. Because it scores the conversation as it happens, you get a ranked shortlist with a transcript behind every rating, not a folder of videos to watch.

One-way video is better than a phone tag spreadsheet. A real conversation that scores itself is better than both, and your strongest candidates are the ones who notice the difference.
